<= A loyal TS user for 7 years now, over a variety of different servers all of which were active, and never cracked under the pressure. Sound Quality was great, but as it was mentioned before, the quality is determined by the codec of the channel(for TS) and therefore can change. I happen to prefer the UI of TS to Vetrillo's UI because it is pretty, and not complicated. TS lag has never been an issue, and even with the fact that TS has the most robust internet connection of any program I know, it takes a serious interruption to disturb it, and sometimes, it will keep going. I for one love TS, and it's open, accessable UI and features much more than I do Ventrilo's. I have used both, I have played games where I was using both at the same time, under the game, and
feel it is the superior program.
My two cents, Teamspeak is still very much alive and kicking, maybe people just arn't advertising their use of it anymore.

They set their ciberbrains to autistic mode.
They should add separate unique servers, so everyone went to the same system.
Joining a district would be like joining a voice chat room. And switching chanelds would turn of voices.
That would be cool.

Used both and its vent all the way for me. I find the sound quality on TS to be terrible.

I have used both and feel they are very similar. I have had lag and bad voice on both, also had great experience with both. If you take a few mins to use them, they are both very simple and customizable. My experience in GW has it about 60/40 with vent just now obtaining 40 but growing. People just seem to use whatever they are most comfortable with, and that leads to bragging about which one they use as being the best.
As for me I use both but my alliance favors TS.

Possible Answer 1: Some people have very annoying voices.
Possible Answer 2: Ventrilo is better.
Possible Answer 3: People have finally learned to type in a way others can understand... and they type fast too.
Pick one of the answers shown. I'm sure it's one of them.

It is mostly a matter of preference but for the following:
1) It is easy to set up a TS server for free. As far as I know, vent servers cost a little $.
2) Ventrilo is slightly easier to use, as the client is more full-featured. One key point is the ability to customize the volume of each user independently.
3) In terms of sound quality both are equally capable. Both support the basic codecs, and there is no point in going up to better sound codecs because it takes so much bandwidth you'll begin to lag.

couple of misconceptions:
1) the sound quality of one over the other is completely based on settings. you can configure both to run your choice of codecs. if one is setup with a lower bitrate code, sure it's going to sound worse. but if you set both up with the same codec, you'd get the same quality sound.
2) "one server lags way more than the other." this is going to be completely based on the server machine it's running on. if the vent is running off a server thats connected via dialup, sure it's going to lag... there are some RARE cases where teamspeak and/or vent actually conflicts with a game and causes lag, but this is VERY rare.
the main actual difference is the server licensing.
Teamspeak Server License: if i want to run a teamspeak server using the extra machine and my 10mpbs connection at home, all I have to do is download the free server software and install it. then I can have my entire guild/clan/whatever connect and use that teamspeak server.
Vent Server License: if I want to use a vent server, I have rent/lease access to one (or find someone who is renting one but will give me access for free). pretty much end of story.
the actual license for running the vent server software is: 1) you have to buy slots for 1000 people minimum. 2) you have to be a legitimate business with a business license. 3) you have to sign a contract that stating that your slot number will increase in the future.
[edit:] source for vent licensing

When I started playing people used vent and TS about equally, but ever since I got a new computer (last summer) I needed to use TS a total of one time (I remember that because I had to download it).
American guilds/groups use 100% vent. With euro groups, I'd say it's about 75% vent and 25% TS.

Vent usage in GW is simple path dependence.
Several years ago, THE big server used by numerous guilds was a Vent server. Guilds rented space via donations. Everyone who was anyone learned to use Vent, because you ended up on that Vent server sooner or later for HA or GvG.
Everyone in the PvP community therefore knew how to use the program. A standard was born.
Personally, I find Vent to be the superior program. It's more user-friendly and offers a much wider range of options. However, as Microsoft proved with DOS, this has little to do with what emerges as the standard.

Teamspeak has an inferior codec, inferior server options, inferior external control panel systems, and an inferior interface. All around, Ventrilo is better. The only thing is, Ventrilo has a slightly larger footprint on RAM usage (2MB larger! God forbid...)

You have to configure your computer to act as a server, and you cannot run both the Client (user interface you login using to speak to people) and the server protocols on the same PC. If you are inexperienced with server configurations, you are going to open yourself up to be hacked by foul users. The best option is to rent a small 20-25 man server for your guild. They are not expensive (60 dollars or less per year?)

I find this the best feature ever invented. Cause no matter how hard you try, there's always going to be someone that cannot adjust his own microphone volume properly.
I've used both, and i actually started with TS. But after a while i just started to prefer vent. Seems to lag less and has a better interface.
